About Us
The Epilepsy Association of the Maritimes (EAM) is the only organization in the Maritimes that serves persons living with epilepsy, their families, and the community at large. EAM serves by offering Seizure First Aid and Epilepsy education to schools, workplaces, and community groups. We provide programs including one on one and peer matching, monthly Knowledge is Power, PACES and social events for inclusion and overcoming isolation. EAM provides scholarships and bursaries to students living with epilepsy to support engagement in post-secondary education. Our organization provides navigation to health and well-being options such as, housing, Department of Community Services, mental health, and financial assistance to ensure clients’ needs are being met holistically and not just as direct seizure care. EAM offers guidance to individuals, families, and caregivers to be best prepared when meeting with employers, community supports and healthcare providers. This increases the quality and efficiency of meetings and consultations aiding to mitigate the strains on our current systems. Profits from Purple Day T-Shirt go to helping EAM better support our members.
About Purple Day
Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26th annually, people in countries around the world are invited to wear purple and host events in support of epilepsy awareness. Last year, people in more than 85 countries on all continents participated in Purple Day! Canada is the only country in the world who officially recognizes March 26th as Purple Day through the Purple Day Act implemented on June 28, 2012.
Cassidy Megan created the idea of Purple Day in 2008, motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy. Cassidy’s goal is to get people talking about epilepsy in an effort to dispel myths and inform those with seizures that they are not alone. The Epilepsy Association of The Maritimes came on board in 2008 to help develop Cassidy’s idea which is now known as Purple Day.
